Prescribed Burning in Talbot County
There are currently near 1000 acres of established warm season grasses in Talbot County that are enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and are required to be maintained. Established stands of warm season grasses (WSG) do not require frequent attention, but most need occasional management to rejuvenate the stand and keep undesireable trees and shrubs and noxious weeds from invading. Prescribed burning is the most effective management technique for removing accumulated plant litter and controlling plants. Where feasible, a warm season grass stand should be burned once every three to four years. Mowing is a alternative for burning but if the clippings are not removed they could smother the plants and prevent the desired new growth.
Currently the district, in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Heritage division, has begun to develop prescribed burn plans. The District's goal is to provide assistance to landowners to help them plan, develop and execute a prescribed burn plan. If you are interested in a prescribed burn plan, contact Shawn Smith.
